Bessa unveils its recent work of art – the Uk Sofa

Portuguese art and design brand, Bessa, recovers techniques of craft production into unique, exclusive and luxurious home decor pieces. Bringing back the charm of ancient times through a new interpretation, Bessa’s latest design – the Uk Sofa – is a modern interpretation of a classic era.

A unique vision of the past, creating a ‘new-old’ aesthetic, Bessa’s exclusive work recreates feelings and stories of other times that seek to build a perfect past – a past full of exciting memories and inspiring feelings of nostalgia. Bessa’s mission is to bring into our lives a new concept of decor and interior uses by designing unique and exclusive pieces.

Head Designer for Bessa, João Bessa, seeks the origins in all aspects of his daily life for inspiration for Bessa’s exclusive designs. João explains: “Being passionate about the history of design, I am inspired by vintage and classic movements and recreate the best of the past in my own way.” Combining his very own style with art and design, João creates luxurious furniture pieces of pure beauty.

Bessa’s latest design, the Uk Sofa, was inspired by the famous chesterfield sofa. The result is how João mixes his own design with antique styles. The sofa, despite having an old style, breathes modernity – a perfect modern interpretation of a classic era. The originality of the Uk Sofa is in the innovative details while remaining familiar to the original classic design.

However, unlike the original chesterfield sofa, the Uk Sofa appears to be levitating. This refreshing aesthetic comes from the exquisite brass tube foot João implemented in its design. Whilst, the velvet upholstery adds a touch of elegance by accentuating the bright color with reflections.

“When I look at this velvet, I see pure luxury and comfort. It has an amazing effect with the light,” explains João. He continues: “Velvet is great to instantly add a luxurious vibe to all interiors with deep tones and rich textures.

“Velvet is looking to be on-trend, so there are even more reasons to implement it into homes. Incredible velvet interiors are indicators of good taste, richness and sophistication.”

Opting for a vibrant, rich and luxurious colour, João also believes strong colours are on-trend, as João explains: “People want colour in their lives. With industrialisation, greys and blacks tend to take possession of our homes and people just don’t want that anymore. The colour is ‘joy’ and people want ‘joy’. The homes of 1920s and 30s were much more cheerful – people want that back again.”

Perched on the arm of the Uk Sofa hangs a gold, handmade tassel, adding a touch of luxury. “This was incorporated to bring passionate memories,” explains João. “These furniture details were common during the Victorian and Baroque eras. Our pieces tell a story and have a soul that holds the essence of the past. These details, such as the gold tassel detailing, facilitate the recreation of feelings and stories.”

Gold is a sophisticated tone and offers a sophisticated style. “This does not have to be black and gold as most people think,” explains João. “It is easier and safer to work with blacks with golds, but if we know how to merge a good colour contrast with a gold, we can perform miracles. In the case of the Uk Sofa this combination of tones work in perfect harmony.”

All Bessa’s creations are designed to fulfil the requirements of exclusive clients who demand the best for their lives. The company’s target is the luxury market, allowing consumers to live unique experiences. “The world tends to trivialise itself so the market looks for unique and exclusive products,” says João. “Pieces that make the difference in our lives, pieces that thrill us and bring us sensations that industrialisation will never bring.”

For 2017, Bessa is working on some exclusive art and design pieces and limited editions that will bring elegant stories and passionate memories from the past to 2017’s interiors.
