Over the last few years the link between our physical environments and our emotional wellbeing has been extensively investigated. Biophilia focuses on human’s instinctive attraction to nature – a genetic connection to the natural world created through a number of years living in rural environments. It is believed that over time, our connection with nature has faded due to urbanisation, which is believed to have caused many problems with the mental and physical health of the population.

Many designers are now exploring how having an affinity with the natural environment when designing, as well as having an innate understanding of how best to bring nature closer to life and leisure, is the way forward in the world of design.

A stunning example of this notion is a cafe which recently opened its doors in Melbourne. The Hungry Fox, by LaManna at Autocentro at Essendon Fields, has been designed using natural materials from around the world in the attempt to bring nature closer to the customers.
